Advancing healthcare climate resilience in European mountains

The impact of climate change on people and the planet is becoming increasingly clear. More frequent extreme weather events are on the rise each year, and their effect on public health and health systems is becoming more and more evident.

Communities living in European mountain regions face different challenges. Decreased air quality, rising temperatures, increased extreme weather events and more intense heatwaves, and the increased risk of floods and landslides pose significant health threats, all while challenging the health systems’ capacity to respond to these risks.

MOUNTADAPT brings together expertise from 27 partners, including healthcare facilities, public authorities, innovators, and researchers. Together, they aim to strengthen health systems in European mountain areas to improve their response to climate change, while protecting people’s health and well-being from its impact.

Objectives

Improving prediction

Improving the ability to predict how climate change will affect people's health in both the short and long term

Enhancing healthcare resilience

Enhancing health systems’ ability to respond quickly and effectively to the challenges posed by climate change

Training and raising awareness

Equipping health professionals to better prevent and respond to climate-related health threats, and increase the population’s awareness and preparedness

Developing innovative solutions

Developing and testing innovative solutions for monitoring, early warning, response, and emergency management for healthcare climate adaptation plans

Replicating and upscaling

Expanding successful climate adaptation strategies from pilot areas to other regions and institutions, within and beyond mountain areas

A collaborative approach

MOUNTADAPT employs a strategy based on co-creation and knowledge-sharing among 27 partners and health systems – which include all the people, institutions, activities, and resources aimed at protecting health.

Adaptation solutions are co-designed, developed and tested at the project’s sites. In parallel, guidance and training to adapt to climate change and replicate the identified solutions are developed, to ensure broad and lasting impact.
